Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare, degenerative, invariably fatal brain disorder. It affects about one person in every one million people per year worldwide; in the United States there are about 200 cases per year. CJD usually appears in later life and runs a rapid course. Typically, onset of symptoms occurs about age 60, and about 90 percent of patients die within 1 year. In the early stages of disease, patients may have failing memory, behavioral changes, lack of coordination and visual disturbances. As the illness progresses, mental deterioration becomes pronounced and involuntary movements, blindness, weakness of extremities, and coma may occur.
I'm Sue Kroning, a bridge friend of Sara's from Seaside.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful blog her family has created! I have just been riveted reading it all, and admiring the photos. It makes me feel connected again to a dear friend who we all miss so much.
I will always think of Sara when I make a ham according to her recipe (and served at her wonderful Easter parties), or water the sedge grass plant I dug up from her garden to plant in mine as a memory of her.
God bless the new child who has arrived as Sara is close to leaving, perpetuating the marvelous circle of life. And God bless Sara.
Sara was a phenomenal person and a gifted teacher. Her spirit and her zest for life will not be forgotten. I feel blessed to have had her as a mentor and a teacher. My thoughts are with you all.
